I know...I know, It's an oxymoron isnt' it? Just like jumbo shrimp or military intelligence. Just keep in mind, no matter what anyone tells you, if your premium goes down...your risk goes up. That's the way insurance works folks.
But there are ways to take on certain risks and enjoy affordable health insurance. As long as the risk is limited. For example, I just worked with a family of three who hadn't been to the doctor in two years. Yet, they were paying for doctor visits on their medical insurance. Why not assume that risk and pocket that portion of the monthly premium (yes, you can do it). If they do need to see a doctor, they can pay for it out of pocket but get the charges discounted by having them billed through the insurance company. It might even be possible to deduct the charges on their taxes. The $40 per month they were paying on their medical insurance to cover the doctor's visits over a two year period ($960), would cover a lot of doctor's office visits. When you pay that money to an medical insurance company, you'll never get it back. Get it? These are the ways to make your health insurance affordable.
How about going with a higher deductible for in-hospital stays. This same family of three was carrying a $500 deductible. When I asked when the last time any of them had been hospitalized, it went like this:
father - never
mother - when she gave birth to daughter 17 years ago.
daughter - never
By changing to a $2500 deductible, they knocked another $120 per month off of their monthly premium. If they only go 17 months without being hospitalized, they're ahead of the game. Again, they're taking on a little more risk but it's managed risk and it could save them a ton of money in the long run.
I've only mentioned two ways to make your health insurance affordable, there are dozens of ways to do it and still protect yourself and your family against any significant losses.
I don't have to tell you that times are tough. They are! And guess what...health insurance premiums aren't going down anytime soon. So what we need to do is think outside of the box a little bit.
